The Centre for Innovation in Biotechnology was established with funding from the International Fund for Ireland, to promote and exploit biotechnology research in Northern Ireland. The centre represents a partnership between the University of Ulster and The Queen's University of Belfast in Northern Ireland and BioResearch Ireland in the Republic of Ireland. The centre's mission is to catalyse the growth and development of the biotechnology infrastructure in Northern Ireland. The centre develops links between companies seeking to improve their processes or develop new products and research groups keen to apply their research expertise and to find industrial partners to exploit their ideas commercially. The centre is involved in identifying opportunities for collaborative research with industry and liaising with companies to aid technology transfer, and the development of new products, increasing the awareness of intellectual property matters through its newly founded IP Platform, encouraging companies to invest in and exploit new patents and existing knowledge within the universities, identifying opportunities for contract research and licensing, and encouraging the development of spin-out companies based on biotechnology research. A number of recent developments in Northern Ireland, including enhanced technology transfer and research infrastructure in the universities, provision of dedicated bioscience incubators, including the new Bioscience and Technology Institute in Belfast, science park developments in Coleraine and Belfast, and the establishment of seed funds, are encouraging further growth in the sector. The centre recently received additional funding in excess of 500,000 from Northern Ireland Foresight funds administered through the Industrial Research and Technology Unit (IRTU) of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) for a further three years of operation. Operation of the centre is monitored by a board comprising representatives from the University of Ulster, The Queen's University of Belfast, BioResearch Ireland, the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland, the IRTU and key industrial areas. Industrial sectors that should benefit through collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Biotechnology include pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, food and drink, animal and plant health, chemical engineering and the environment.
