AMENDED EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

ES.1 Objectives
This report aims to provide readers with an overview of the world market for poultry health and nutrition products. It outlines both the health problems encountered by commercially-reared poultry and the main product types used by the industry to prevent, control and treat disease in layer, broiler and turkey flocks. It also examines recent developments and future trends in poultry production, consumption and trade, highlighting future drivers of demand in the sector at national, regional and global level. Individual chapters are also devoted to the market for poultry health and nutrition products and to the businesses of major companies involved in the sector.

ES.2 Scope and methodology
Information on poultry diseases and the products used to prevent, treat and control major poultry health problems was gathered from veterinary textbooks, Animal Pharm newsletter, statistical reports published by the Office International des Epizooties, and from veterinary association and other specialist websites.

Since the size of poultry flocks in many markets can only be estimated roughly, and in view of the rapid flock turnover that is a feature of the dominant broiler sector, information on the size of the poultry industry has been presented in terms of poultry product output. Data on production, consumption and trade in poultry meat and eggs was gathered largely from information compiled by the US Department of Agriculture. Forecasts of future trends in production, consumption and trade are based on reports produced by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Accurate statistics on the value of the world market for poultry health and nutrition products are difficult to find partly because many products administered to poultry are also used widely in other species. This is a major factor behind apparent under-reporting of poultry product sales by industry association audits in many markets.

Starting from the premise of a 1999 global market value of $4.1 billion (estimated by the UK analysts, Vivash-Jones Consultants Ltd), profiles of market structure by product category and region were built up by studying a variety of animal health business reports, other published industry sources, and through contact with both industry associations and leading manufacturers in appropriate sectors of the market. National market values are based largely on information generated via industry association sales audits. As noted above, however, these are notoriously inaccurate where sales in the poultry products market are concerned. Alternative assessments of national market values have been provided where possible but since few industry associations deal with nutritional products these are not included in national market figures. Market data for individual countries is therefore not directly comparable with global figures quoted in the first section of Chapter 4.

While many companies are involved in the manufacture and supply of poultry health and nutrition products at national or regional level, the global market is dominated by a relatively small number of major multinational corporations. The portfolios of 15 such companies are examined in the final chapter of the report. Business profiles were compiled using information gathered from the relevant company websites, Animal Pharm newsletter, other Animal Pharm business reports, national product compendia and direct contact with the companies involved.
