APPENDIX 1 REGIONAL ANIMAL POPULATION STATISTICS BY COUNTRY, 1999
Executive Summary
The animal health market for reproduction products is a relatively small sector of the overall sales of veterinary
products and is estimated to be worth around $168 million. Nonetheless, these products provide the necessary
control over the reproductive process, which facilitate the more advanced techniques, and thus form the foundation
of the latest technological achievements in controlled animal breeding.
This report, Reproduction Products for the Animal Health Industry, is both an update and a replacement of two previous Animal Pharm reports Control of Reproduction (1987) and New Developments in Animal Reproduction and Breeding (1991). It provides information in an easy-to-read, concise style and is designed to offer the reader a valuable overview of this small, but important, sector of the animal health market. The content will be valuable for anyone with an interest in the current market situation, as well as for identifying future trends. The report is especially suited to product managers and marketing directors looking for an overview of the market and an evaluation of the future opportunities for the reproductive products sector of the animal health market.
The report includes a comprehensive review of products (including hormones and prostaglandins) used to control reproduction in animals, together with products and test kits used for oestrus detection and diagnosis of pregnancy. However, due to physiological differences, only domestic mammalian species are included. This report does not seek to include vaccines or antimicrobial products which may be used to control conditions of an infectious nature affecting the reproductive tract. Also excluded are ultrasound equipment and ancillary disposables, and other equipment such as catheters and artificial insemination collection apparatus.
The techniques used to control reproduction are briefly described and the associated use of any product is identified, so that the reader can appreciate the need for each product and how it relates to changes in the management of each livestock or companion animal species.
The text reviews how the products are used, highlights potential market opportunities, and seeks to identify trends, new developments and the likely direction of future research. The current market environment is reviewed by country and animal populations in each market are provided in Appendix 1 to allow regional comparisons by country. The key market players are profiled, and contact details for relevant companies, organisations and associations are provided.
